Mechanism of action of D-mannose
D-mannose is believed to competitively inhibit bacteria (particularly E. coli) from attaching to the lining of the bladder and urethra. This mechanism allows the bacteria to be excreted in urine more easily, thereby reducing the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Another clinical study found that D-mannose is effective in preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly in patients with frequent UTIs. Daily D-mannose intake significantly reduced infection rates. UTI symptoms were reduced in patients taking D-mannose supplements, and compared to antibiotics, D-mannose showed similar efficacy but with fewer side effects. It is equally effective and does not contribute to drug resistance.
